IMDR is a testimony to the vision of its parent body, the Deccan Education Society (DES). The Deccan Education Society (DES) was established in 1884 by the stalwarts of India’s freedom struggle, like Agarkar and Tilak and later built by great personalities of the era; Gopal krishna Gokhale and Dhondo Keshav Karve (honoured with Bharat Ratna). These visionaries aimed to channelise the energy and devotion of the youth that could drive ordinary men to do extra-ordinary things. The DES was established to streamline the spiraling unrest among the youth in pre-independence era towards the greater task of nation building.

One of the main goals of the DES was to provide education to wider sections of the society by making it inexpensive and affordable. The DES spirit has not led the noble ideas of the founders to crystallise over the years but has ensured that the society is a trendsetter in various fields of education. The Fergusson College – the oldest and the most famous among DES institutions, was established in 1885.

The DES also started a commerce college viz. B.M.C.C before independence which is considered one of the best colleges imparting education in commerce stream. Similarly, it pioneered Management Education in 1968 at a time when the engineering and automobile industry in Pune was just beginning to take shape.

At the start of the liberalisation process in 1991, the society pioneered a fulltime education program in international trade. The spirit of entrepreneurship in the sociual filed has been amply in evidence in the growth of the institution of the Deccan Education Society.
